Monday’s Typewriter: Remington Rand Model Seventeen

E. Remington & Sons, an arms, and later sewing machine company founded in New York in 1816, bought the patent (US. # 79,265) for a new kind of mechanical writing machine in 1867 from Densmore and Yost, who had themselves bought the patent from the inventors Christopher Scholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel Lewis. The pricetag was $12,000.

Remington started production of the first commercial typewriter in 1873.

Remington’s typewriter business was spun off in 1886, sold to the Standard Typewriter Manufacturing Company, which later merged with the Rand Kardex Company in 1927, to form Remington Rand. The company continued to make typewriters, and later electric razors and computers (including the first UNIVAC).

The Remington Rand Model Seventeen was released in 1939, with the innovation of rubber-topped, rather than glass-topped keys, and did much of the typing for the US military during WWII. It stayed in production until 1950.

This beauty was found and photographed in a country store in Indiana, by Timothy K Hamilton.

Need information on Remington Typewriter “Seventeen” fully restored after having been recovered from the USS Oklahoma salvage operation after it was sunk Dec. 7th 1941. The typewriter is in mint condition having been completely restored in 1950 by a USN Chief Instrument man.

I’m looking to purchase a Remington Model 17 with elite type in good working condition if anyone out there has one to sell. Looks don’t matter but function does; this is for an 89-year-old who types on one everyday.

    Hi-

Do you know where I look on a Remington to find the serial number? I haven’t a clue!

I found mine by moving the carriage to the far left. Look under the bar, press the bar and the bell rings. Mine is a model 17 long carriage serial number dates to 1939 according to “the typewriters data base.” Actually wanting to get rid of mine to but it is just too heavy to ship as it might get damaged.

I have a Remington typewriter model 17 that was found in the cargo hold of a marine vessel being salvaged. The typewriter is in mint condition, has never been used and is still in its original factory packing crate. Has instruction manual with accessories. Will consider an offer to sell.
